Redesign Your Life to Create Meaning and Purpose
We are living in the most pivotal time in history of humanity. You can’t afford not to know how society is directly impacting your life. Today more than ever we are witnessing a large segment of our population that is questioning both the current systems in our global society and their purpose in relation to these systems.
Contrary to what previous generations have considered as the norm, currently more and more individuals are looking to redesign a live with meaning and purpose, in order to make a positive difference and to create a better world.
The Old Paradigm
The status quo of the old paradigm informs us that the route to happiness is: “Get a degree, build a successful career, earn good money, acquire stuff, and it will be even better if you can attain status and power! That is your happiness, this is the American dream! Since the Second World War, this very outdated belief has largely helped corporations expand their businesses and build out their empires across the globe. The factories that previously served the war machine were given a new purpose: to create consumer goods in support of the new “Consumer Economy.” The wasteful and polluting “Take-Make-Waste” linear manufacturing model was in turn supported by the advertising industry, to create false needs and desires, AKA “Social Engineering”. To complete the transaction, cheap or free credit was provided by the finance sector to encourage the mass consumption of goods.
Manufacturing, Advertising and Credit, known as the “Magic Triangle”, were the systems used to create the “Consumer Economy”.
But as we are finding out today, endless and needless consumption can lead to dangerous, financial traps to pay back credit card bills, not to mention the wholesale legalized destruction of the environment simply for the endless pursuit of profits. These financial traps are how the “debt culture” was born, and it is one of the biggest challenges facing the millennial generation today. This debt culture is an example of social engineering or as Edward Bernays (1891-1995), the godfather of Public Relations said:
“The engineering of consent of the masses without them knowing…The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, and our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. It is they who pull the wires that control the public mind.” Edward Bernays (1891-1995)
Knowing that our own habits and opinions are being manipulated negates the reality we’re led to believe that we have full control of our desires, beliefs and actions. But if we look at our current culture and societal norms, what Bernays writes rings true. It begs the question: Does this way of thinking and operating really serve humanity’s highest potential?
The Fourth Industrial Revolution
As humans continue to evolve, we are now seeing another major shift in our society: the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We are now witnessing the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, machine learning and automation, all of which are completely transforming and revolutionizing the nature of work. With the rise of automation and machines, many jobs are becoming redundant. The employment landscape is drastically changing. Competition is increasing for the fewer remaining jobs. Salaries are stagnating while inflation continues to increase each year. At the same time, we are confronted with a large proportion of individuals with college degrees pursuing careers they are unhappy with. As students take on even more debt, are universities and educational institutions properly equipping these individuals with the right life and business skills to navigate and thrive in this Fourth Industrial Revolution? Is the emerging Millennial and Gen Z workforce ready for these changes? With all the time, money and energy spent on attaining these degrees, why are these adults stuck in often low paid jobs that do not bring joy or fulfillment?
How can students reconcile in their mind this huge debt in return for low paid jobs?
The Paradigm Shift
Even though we are still strongly influenced by the old status quo, we have entered into a new paradigm of awareness. The world online has helped millions of individuals to become more informed about our global society, its unsustainable systems and current self-destructive trajectory. Armed with this new level of awareness, the younger generations (Gen X, Y, and Z) have begun to deeply question the systems we see in front of us – Interest based Finance, Industrial Food, Pharmaceutical Healthcare, Fossil Fuel Energy, to name a few.
We are starting to experience a wake-up call that is leading us to the realization that we no longer want the same status quo inherited from previous generations. Why don’t we want this status quo? Because it’s unfair! it’s unsustainable and… it’s unfulfilling!
We realize that the current systems in place are outdated and do not represent our wellbeing and autonomy. We, Gen X, Y and Z, perceive and experience the world very differently! For these generations it is common sense that in order to accomplish a life with meaning and purpose we must operate with a new set of consciousness, values and behaviors that includes regenerating the earth’s ecosystems, developing more social enterprises and employee owned organizations. The Paradigm Shift is leading each young man and woman to experience a necessary internal crisis that represents an evolution in our consciousness.
This internal crisis is a re-evaluation of the many belief systems they inherited from previous generations that are not aligned with their values. These young men and woman are reaching a collective calling and realization, they do not want profit alone, and instead they want meaning and purpose.
What’s stopping you to achieve a life with meaning and purpose?
Can cultural beliefs shape the quality of our lives?
Before rushing in to wanting to make a difference and redesign our lives, it is of vital importance to understand how crucial the right mindset and belief system is to our success. There is a great difference between surviving and thriving. The main weakness of the average person is based upon their belief system that shapes their lives. This belief system is usually unconscious and inherited from childhood, family and culture. The quality of our belief systems and behaviors are often the reason that is blocking us from successfully moving from where we are today to where we want to be. Whatever we choose to believe, feel and act upon either moves us away from or towards where we want to be.
The average person is very familiar with the word “impossible”. They believe they know all the rules about why things won’t work. They believe they know all the things that can’t be done or changed. And they measure everything and everyone by their own impressions and limiting beliefs. Some, even believe they are doomed to be poor and to fail because deep down their belief systems led them to believe they do not deserve a better life. Without a healthy mindset supported by healthy habits, the chances of failure increase. If we want to successfully redesign a meaningful and successful life, it is wise that we invest quality time in yourselves in order to rebuild a solid inner foundation.
Our Inner Foundation is our source of a healthy self-esteem, vitality and well-being and consists of on our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health. If we really want to achieve a meaningful life we probably need to review our levels of self-esteem and these four aspects in our life before making any important decision. The more we know about ourselves, the better results we can achieve in life. You can learn more about healthy self -esteem and Inner Foundation in this link.
Some of the main reasons for failing to achieve a life with meaning and purpose:
Fear of failure
Poor social skills
Lack of Empathy
Lack of Creativity
Lack of Ownership
Lack of Resilience
Poor Organizational Skills
Poor Time Management
The Growth Mindset
Manifesting the Growth Mindset on a daily basis is vitally important to our success. If you are reading this article and you are looking to improve yourself, it means you are not an average person with an average mindset and you have great potential. All of us can develop the Growth & Abundance mindset.
What is the “Growth and Abundance Mindset” and how can it support you in my journey to successfully redesign my life?
The growth or abundance mindset is a combination of positive thoughts, emotions and beliefs, supported with a set of key personality characteristics. This combination, in turn leads into a healthy self- esteem, positive and constructive behaviors and habits. Together, these thoughts, emotions, beliefs and repeated behaviors act as a “powerful magnet” to attract opportunities that contains the same vibrations or frequency that we are emitting. The brain is a radio antenna, emitting frequencies, as thoughts and emotions, either positively or negatively charged. We attract into our life what we believe.
Today we are very aware of how our culture and the mainstream media narrative is continuously bombarding us with thoughts and emotions of fear, scarcity, violence, failure, etc. However, it is not enough just to be aware of this reality. It is our responsibility to choose to disengage from these harmful distractions and manipulation tactics and instead re-focus our attention upon what we want to learn, create and achieve.
How can we redesign our lives?
In order for you to redesign your life, you must understand who you are first, therefore a solid inner foundation is required supported by healthy self-esteem and the growth mindset. In this process you may review all areas of your life so you can bring forward the best version of your self. In order for you to successfully redesign a meaningful life you may consider the following steps:
The Self-discovery phase uncovers what is holding you back? What thoughts, emotions, people, situations, behaviors, relationships, are holding you back? By taking an inventory of our current situation, we gain a deeper understanding of where we are now, identify what’s blocking us and what we want to change.
The Personal Development phase helps us to explore and acknowledge who we are at our authentic core – our strengths, weaknesses, values and more. A process designed to dissolve the imprint of what others think we should be or do while uncovering what you know is best for you. This phase is designed to empower you both in your personal and professional life by developing clarity, inner authority and personal power.
The Self-Actualization phase requires series of life and career coaching exercises to help you gain a deep understanding of what you want to do and how you can manifest your entrepreneurial spirit in a meaningful way. Tangible plans of action are thought through, researched, discussed and created. This phase will guide you to create a lifestyle with more meaning fully aligned with your Authentic Self.
“Desire is the starting point of all achievement, not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire which transcends everything.”- Napoleon Hill.
If you feel called to redesign your life and embark upon the social entrepreneurship adventure, it will be wise to reflect upon your values before researching for a market “niche” that can serve your community. Knowledge about yourself and the needs of your community can determine how successful your idea will be. Consider to have a mission statement that reflects your intentions and self-goals, no matter how basic it is to outline your purpose and direction. People need to be self-aware to the point that they can define what purpose they want to serve in life. As a conscious, awake and informed human being, this step is very important in managing your success and the dynamics generated between all of your personal associations, projects and the intentions behind them. With this clarity of purpose, this allows you to check in for personal resonance quickly when things between people and organizations evolve over time, to better monitor if you need to make changes in the intent or consent that you have made in the relationships that you have created.
With this in mind what do you think you can offer or do? Who can you serve?
Knowing the local and global challenges that we face today many young adults are asking how can we create solutions to improve our future and our communities while also make a living. Social entrepreneurs are needed to develop new businesses for a new century and are willing to take on the risk and effort to create positive changes in society through their initiatives. They don’t measure their success in terms of profit alone but in positive social and environmental impact. However, a social entrepreneur must still be financially savvy to succeed in his or her cause.
Social entrepreneurs have different values and they are re- writing the rules of what it means to be self employed by combining meaning and purpose with a business-like discipline, in a way that improves the lives of people connected to the cause.
The secret to successfully redesigning your life is dedicating quality time to the transformational journey of self-discovery, personal development and self-actualization. Knowledge is power. The more knowledge you have about yourself and your marketplace, the easier it will be for you to navigate your life on a personal and professional level. Having the support of a skilled mentor with direct personal experience of this journey, someone who can guide you successfully through this process and help you uncover the wisdom that lies within you, will be of great benefit.
Here are some important things we may consider when embarking upon this journey of personal transformation.
